O Produtor, tasting note published in May 8th 2023

Garnet in color, it presents expressive notes of red fruits on the nose, perfectly harmonized with subtle aromas of forest and fine spices. On the palate, it begins in a captivating manner, evolving into a wine of excellent volume and fine texture. A wine that demonstrates all the freshness and elegance of the Tinta Francisca and Touriga Nacionalgrape varieties, when planted at an altitude of 430 meters and north-facing exposure. A seductive wine that finishes with excellent freshness and great elegance.

Quinta do Crasto

Crasto Altitude 430 wine is the result of research carried out by the viticulture and winemaking teams of Quinta do Crasto, aiming to explore the potential of the many indigenous grape varieties of the Douro region.

The differentiating characteristics of Crasto Altitude 430 wine are, first and foremost, the grape varieties used – Tinta Francisca (70%) and Touriga Nacional(30%) – Portuguese grape varieties typical of the Douro, which make up the final blend that Quinta do Crasto considers to meet this wine profile.

The Tinta Francisca grape variety, due to its altitude, has always shown good freshness and a very interesting aromatic component, producing a wine with a more open color but with excellent structure. The Touriga Nacionalgrape variety, being a very expressive grape and also at altitude, presents excellent acidity, great natural freshness, and aromatically, exhibits fresher red fruit aromas and not as dense fruit as is sometimes normal in Touriga Nacionalgrapes from lower altitudes.

The vinification of Crasto Altitude 430 wine is also distinctive, following a process different from the usual production of the rest of Quinta do Crasto’s wine range.

Vinification: The grapes, harvested and transported in 22 kg boxes, underwent rigorous sorting upon arrival at the winery. They were then destemmed, lightly crushed, and transferred to stainless steel fermentation tanks with temperature control, where they fermented for 4 days with skin maceration and very light extraction. They were then pressed into barrels where they finished fermentation.

Aging for 12 months in used French oak barrels.

Quinta do Crasto

The first known references to Quinta do Crasto can be traced back to 1615, long before the Douro Valley became the world’s first demarcated wine region in 1756. The property is a historic one and is recorded as having been awarded “feitoria” status (the highest vineyard classification of the time) in 1761. The original demarcation was marked with a series of granite markers. One of these markers, called “marco pombalino”, dating back to 1758, is still visible at the Quinta.

In the early 1900s, Quinta do Crasto was purchased by Constantino de Almeida, founder of the famous Constantino Port house. Following his death in 1923, his son, Fernando de Almeida, continued to run the Quinta, producing stellar Port wines.

In 1981, Fernando de Almeida’s daughter, Leonor Roquette, and her husband, Jorge Roquette, assumed majority ownership and management of the estate. With the help of their sons, Miguel and Tomás, they began the process of remodelling and expanding the vineyards and facilities to enable the production of top quality Port and Douro wines. Quinta do Crasto has now reclaimed its rightful status as one of the great family estates of the Douro region.
