O Produtor, tasting note published in January 27th 2023

The Quinta do Carmo red wine has a dense and deep ruby color, with complex aromas of ripe fruits, jams, and some vanilla nuances. On the palate, it is a very balanced and elegant wine, with good structure, concentrated, and soft tannins.

Quinta do Carmo

Profile
From the Quinta do Carmo terroir, grapes of the Alicante Bouschet, Aragonês and Trincadeira varieties are selected and harvested in the second half of September, at their ideal point of ripeness. The grapes are completely destemmed and vinified by variety in temperature-controlled lagares or small stainless steel vats. After alcoholic fermentation, they undergo a prolonged post-fermentation maceration. The wines are then matured in French oak barrels for a year. After this stage, they are carefully blended according to the traditional Carmo profile. After ageing in the bottle for around a year, the wine is released for immediate consumption. If kept well, this harvest should develop positively over the next 20 years.

History of the wine
Located in the Alentejo region, a few kilometres from the town of Estremoz, Quinta do Carmo is an estate with a total surface area of 1,000 hectares. The vineyard covers 150 hectares, with the remainder divided between olive groves, cork oak forest, forest and sown land. This vineyard was already producing labelled wines in the 19th century, and it was here that the Alicante Bouschet grape variety was planted for the first time in Portugal, a variety that has always been the basis of Carmo red wines and is now widely represented throughout the Alentejo. The winery was built as part of a joint venture with the Lafite Rothschild group and is equipped with modern winemaking technology, making it possible to extract the very best from the grapes grown here.
