O Produtor, tasting note published in May 27th 2016

The aroma is very elegant, slightly floral, with notes of wild fruit. In the mouth, it appears alive and with acidity involved in a refreshing mineral profile. It presents a good volume of mouth, without being heavy, offering a perfumed, long and very balanced finish.

Quinta da Pellada

This wine comes from 71-year-old vineyards, at about 5000 feet per hectare, located 500 m high and planted on granite soils with sand and clay lines. It was a wine produced from 100% old vine vineyards of the field blend of Quinta da Pellada – plot “Mata”. This plot is surrounded by forest. The thermal currents caused by the temperature difference between night and day have a great influence on the freshness and minerality of the grapes from here. In the field blend of the old vineyard, there are about 40 indigenous Dão grape varieties. Of the identified varieties the ones that exist in greater quantity are Alvarelhão, Alfrocheiro, Touriga Nacional, Baga and Tinta Amarela. With less expression we find others like Tinto Cão, Tinta Pinheira, Jaen among others. Vinification: In 2014, unlike other regions, in Dão, it rained little and there were very hot weeks, with dry nights and sunny mornings, excellent conditions for the harvest. The harvest was short, took place in ideal weather conditions and finished on 27 September. The grapes were vinified respecting all their nature. The fermentation took place in stainless steel mill with controlled temperature (28º to 31º C). Cuvaison for 18 days followed by a 14-month stage in allier oak casks.

Quinta da Pellada

The first historical references about Quinta da Pellada seem to be around 1570. The Dão wine region was established in 1908, framed by three mountain ranges – Buçaco, Caramulo and Serra da Estrela – and preserve from the Atlantic winds, the region as very special climatic conditions and this producer Alvaro Castro is one of the best Portuguese producers and unquestionable leader in Dão wine region. For the Quinta da Pellada come mainly grapes “field blend” from the old vines, but also the Touriga Nacionaland Tinta Roriz, where it discovers the intense fruit and freshness from the farm grapes that give the name to this wine.
