O Produtor, tasting note published in January 2nd 2020

Quinta da Ferradosa Douro Tinto is the fruit of a vineyard that is so diverse in grape varieties as it is in its soil types. This creates a wine, which is very concentrated on the nose and in the mouth reveals red fruits like strawberries and raspberries allied to floral notes. The tannins are present, and bring to the wine an incredible structure. The wine is then balanced by a marked freshness, making this Quinta da Ferradosa a very elegant wine.

Quinta da Ferradosa

The Grapes are chosen from a vineyard planted in 1998. Only Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacionaland Tinta Roriz grape varieties were planted. Quinta da Ferradosa only uses 10% of its grape production, selling the rest. This gives us the opportunity to choose bunch by bunch, row by row, which grapes we would like for the best quality wine. In 2014 we chose 50% Touriga Nacionaland 50% Touriga Franca. All wine was vinified at Quinta da Ferradosa winery. All grapes were first foot-trodden in traditional granite lagars before fermenting in stainless steel tanks (5000 kgs). We then rack the resulting wines in new Allier French oak 225 liter casks from various coopers (Taransaud, Seguin Moreau, Nadalié and François Fréres), where they go through malolactic fermentation. All wines are then carefully aged for 15 months in barriques (75% new and 25% one year old French oak), keeping all different fermentations completely separated until the final blending takes place, just about one month before the bottling of the wines.

Quinta da Ferradosa

The first references to Quinta da Ferradosa date back to the end of the 19th century, when it belonged to the Borges family.
At the beginning of the 20th century it was bought by Real Companhia Velha, the oldest Port Wine company.
The construction of the Valeira dam caused a rise in the water level of the Douro River, submerging a large area of vineyard of Quinta da Ferradosa, which affected its viticultural potential and made its access difficult. In the 1990’s, the Quinta was bought by Joaquim Manuel Calem, owner of the company AA Calem & filho Lda, one of the main Portuguese companies producing and exporting Port Wine, created by his great-great-grandfather in 1859. The company remained in the family until the 21st century, when it was sold, together with the brand. However, the Heritage of the Quintas remained in the Calem family. Joaquim Manuel Calem, father of the current owner, had a great passion for Ferradosa, and planted 13 hectares with three of the main varieties of the region: Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz. He was also responsible for the installation of electricity on the property, and also had great plans to rebuild the ruins here, in order to bring back to the Quinta its golden times.
