Quinta da Bacalhôa
With historical records of vineyards dating back to the 15th century, Quinta da Bacalhôa has a long winemaking tradition. In 1974, the world’s most famous French red grape varieties – Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot – were planted, giving rise, in the 1979 harvest, to Portugal’s first Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot. Since then, the terroir of Quinta da Bacalhôa has enabled the production of an elegant wine with great aging potential, establishing itself as a true classic among Portuguese wines.
The vineyard finds an ideal terroir on the estate for producing exceptional wines: well-drained, sandy-loam soils and a mild climate influenced by the Atlantic. The selected grape varieties, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, benefit from these natural conditions, allowing for a slow and balanced maturation. After fermentation at controlled temperature, the wines underwent a “cuvaison” – post-fermentation skin maceration – for two weeks, enhancing color extraction and structure.
Aging: 13 months in new French oak barrels, followed by at least 6 months of bottle aging.
Perfectly pairs with red meats and game, enhancing flavors with its structure and elegance.
