Quinta do Portal
Every vintage is different and this one was no exception. 2021 was another challenging and atypical year, in which the grapes at altitude ended up benefiting from the weather conditions. The winter was very rainy. Spring temperatures were normal, but the saying ‘April, a thousand waters’ applied perfectly this year. Summer began with a lot of instability and heavy rainfall, but in the Pinhão Valley it didn’t turn out to be too catastrophic, as we were spared the hail. However, a lot of wind and heavy rainfall led to great heterogeneity in the plots. We started harvesting the reds on 6 September in the plots that had been hit hardest by the summer heat. We then interrupted with the arrival of the rain, and the reaction of the other plots was fantastic. Apart from some Touriga Franca that didn’t react very well, the rest of the varieties were grateful for the rain and, with a little patience, we ended up with fantastic quality in the high altitude grapes.
