Tim Atkin MW, tasting note published in October 25th 2023

With consistently exceptional quality, it is easy to forget that the Porseleinberg vines are, on average, only seven years old. The 2021 Syrah showcases what winemaker Callie Louw describes as "a bit more crunch," promising a long evolution. On the nose, wild herb aromas such as sage, oregano, and rosemary stand out. The palate is dense and refined, with spice notes from whole-bunch fermentation, a firm structure, finely delineated tannins, and layers of dark fruit.

Porseleinberg 2021 – A South African Icon Reflecting the Rugged Character of Its Schist-Rich Terroir

Perched atop “Porcelain Mountain,” a rocky outcrop near Riebeek Kasteel in Swartland, Porseleinberg Winery has built a cult following among wine enthusiasts. Over the years, its reputation has grown steadily, and today, Porseleinberg Syrah is the highest-rated Syrah in South Africa, earning 5-star ratings in the Platter’s South African Wine Guide in 2012, 2014, 2016, and 2021.

Vinification: Made using 100% whole-bunch fermentation and aged in foudres, this wine balances depth, structure, and purity, ensuring remarkable ageing potential.

“A wine that needs time to fully reveal itself. Fermented with whole bunches and aged for 12 months in foudres, it presents an expressive bouquet of red and black fruits, balanced by mineral and iron-like notes. On the palate, elegant tannins structure a wine of great depth, finishing with a touch of black pepper. A Syrah of immense character, with outstanding ageing potential.” – Neal Martin, Vinous

Porseleinberg

Porseleinberg is a small estate in Swartland. Although owned by the Boekenhoutskloof estate, it is run entirely independently. The estate’s focus is Syrah, supported by other Rhône varieties. Winemaking is as natural as possible, with only natural yeasts and minimal intervention. Winemaker and estate manager Callie Louw would always rather be in the vines than in the cellar, but he is also a talented winemaker, and their Syrah is often likened to top examples of Cornas.
