Pôpa
VINEYARD DESCRIPTION: Grape Origin | Cima Corgo and Quinta do Pôpa. Altitude | 50 to 300 meters. Soil Geology | Schist. Age of Vines | > 25 years.
HARVEST of 2018: A particularly atypical year in climatic terms: with a cold and dry winter, a cold and rainy spring, and a summer with two distinct seasons – the first rainy and the second extremely hot and dry. Clearly one of the most challenging years to manage in sanitary terms due to the winter and spring weather conditions; as well as in terms of maturation, due to the heterogeneity of the summer conditions. Harvest began in the second week of September. Manual harvesting in 20 kg boxes.
VINIFICATION: Blend with 40% Touriga Nacional, 40% Touriga Franca; 20% Old Vine Blend. Reception of the grapes with destemming and crushing done in a lagar using the traditional foot-treading process. Start of alcoholic fermentation in the lagar and completion in stainless steel tanks. Part of the blend underwent post-fermentation maceration. Malolactic fermentation occurred in stainless steel tanks. Aging in French oak barrels for 12 to 15 months. Bottled in July 2021.
PRESS REVIEWS:
“A new release from the Douro, from Quinta do Pôpa, with a clean aroma marked by notes of ripe fruits and spices, a persistent palate with firm tannins enveloped by fruit, good acidity, structure, balance, and a personalized finish. It is a warm, comforting wine that pairs well with snacks and conversations by the fireplace, as well as meat dishes or even a good roasted fish at the table.” Manuel Gonçalves da Silva, Visão 7
“Subtle sweetness, toasty oak, spices adding complexity to red fruit and notes of earth and dry underbrush. Firm in the mouth, with a medium body, tamed tannins, fresh and integrated acidity, and a finish with dryness and slight bitterness.” Revista de Vinhos, Luís Antunes
