Lisa Pettotti-Brown, tasting note published in July 6th 2023

The Pezat 2022 has a medium to deep garnet-purple color. It emerges from the glass with notes of juicy plums, black cherries, and mint tea, with hints of spice cake and cloves. The medium-bodied palate is vibrant and juicy, with smooth tannins and a lively backbone, finishing with a spicy kick.

Pezat

The idea for Pezat came from our belief that we could create an excellent wine, rather than a boring one, from vineyards located near the Saint-Émilion Appellation. To achieve this, we applied the traditional Saint-Émilion techniques both in the vineyard and in winemaking. The wine is produced to high standards, using the same equipment and methods employed at Château Teyssier.

Soil: Sandy clay with gravel outcrops.

Winemaking: 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. Machine harvested, double sorted, temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, aged in French oak barrels for 12 months.

JCP Maltus Domaines & Châteaux

In the heart of Saint-Émilion, where tradition echoes through medieval streets and century-old vineyards shape the horizon, a story of audacity and passion was born. It was here, during the height of the “garage wine” movement in the 1990s, that Jonathan Maltus, an Englishman with African roots, found his home. Inspired by a desire to challenge Bordeaux’s classic norms, he brought with him a simple yet powerful philosophy: do things differently and do things better. For him, the true value of a bottle of wine lies in its taste, not in the grandeur of its label.

At the historic Château Teyssier, Jonathan launched a true revolution. He transformed this iconic estate into a laboratory of innovation while preserving the authenticity that makes Saint-Émilion a global benchmark. Fifteen years later, Jonathan became the first Englishman to achieve the coveted 100 Parker points and was honored by the Queen with an Order of the British Empire, a rare and extraordinary recognition in the world of wine.

With the opening of Le Dôme’s new winery, Jonathan cemented his legacy, blending tradition and modernity in a space that reflects the essence of his vision. In 2008, he crossed the Atlantic and found a new stage for innovation in Napa Valley, California. There, he fused the elegance of Bordeaux’s savoir-faire with the intensity of New World terroirs, crafting wines that celebrate the best of both traditions. This gave rise to the World’s End brand.

The JCP Maltus Domaines & Châteaux team is a rarity in the Bordeaux wine world, managing both the production and commercialization of its wines. In 2015, it solidified a strong position in the en primeur market, and in 2018, it brought an even more ambitious vision to life, creating a company that combines financial strength with an innovative spirit. Today, it is not just a name in the world of wine; it is a testament to the power of challenging conventions and the passion for turning the ordinary into the extraordinary.
