O Produtor, tasting note published in March 24th 2023

Color: Plum purple

Nose: Blue fruits, violets, and cracked black pepper help us to orient ourselves. Fresh blackberries, wild white strawberries, and boysenberries complement a darker nuance of panforte. A freshly baked panettone with vanilla cream adds a sweet allure. Salty aromas manifest as roast beef with horseradish, paprika, Moroccan spices with a touch of burnt matchstick, and pencil shavings.

Palate: The palate is medium-weight, compared to wines like Bin 28 Shiraz from warm climates. The blue fruits noted on the nose are quite apparent on the flavor profile. However, the wine leans towards the savory side of the spectrum. Cured meats, pepper, olives, and paprika flavors vie for attention. On further inspection, almonds and cardamom add to the allure. The tannins are silky, finely woven around the fruit. The acidity line is as neat as a pin. Everything is in the right place, a lovely wine now with decades of potential for those who can wait.

Penfolds

Bin 128 is crafted from fruits sourced from the unique red clay over limestone soils of Coonawarra, a region that highlights the perfume, transparency, and seductive nature of cool-climate red wines.

To further enhance the regional qualities of Bin 128, the wine is aged in a blend of new and used French oak barrels, a process refined during the 1980s when the transition from American to French oak took place.

In the year 2021, flowering conditions were reported to be the best in 20 years, leading to excellent fruit set and yield. Overall, summer and autumn conditions were cooler than average, allowing Shiraz grapes to ripen slowly and evenly. The additional time in the vineyard resulted in a brilliant vintage. This vintage produced an elegant, medium-bodied, and aromatic wine. Aged for 12 months in French oak barrels, it reveals blue fruits, savory notes, and silky tannins.
