O Produtor, tasting note published in May 27th 2021

Very expressive and seductive aroma, full of red fruit and floral aromas. In spite of all its concentration, the Reserva pass 2015 is not a hot or overly full-bodied wine. It is smooth and full of flavors with great persistence of mouth, which is given not by tannin or acidity, but by its wonderful fruit.

Passagem

Quinta das Bandeiras is a 100 hectare property located in Pocinho, next to the Douro River and opposite the famous Vale Meão. With the grapes from Bandeiras, we embarked on an adventure with Jorge Moreira, to produce and market the wine. The wine will be called Passagem (Passage) – appropriate for several reasons. There is a railway line with an abandoned level crossing on the property. And Passagem also portrays the journey and experience of two distinct families, in the Douro: the Bergqvist family (English) and the Moreira family (Portuguese). The fantastic quality of grapes in the 2018 harvest took everyone by surprise. We did not have the ideal weather conditions to have a great year, but we were very pleased with the beautiful grapes that came to the winery. The winter and spring were dry with little rain. A stable weather that allowed a good flowering and predicted an abundant harvest (good news after two years with relatively low production). The summer was generally hot and with little rain, with the exception of a storm in May. By August the vines were under intense stress from lack of water darkening their leaves and turning them brown – especially on the younger vines with smaller roots. But the good news is that the fruit overcame this stress and came into the winery with high quality. The harvest was long and slow. Jorge always says that deciding when to start cutting the grapes is his most important decision and this year it was not easy. We started cutting the white grapes early, in the middle of August, before the rain. Maturation and ageing process : The wine was matured in French oak barrels, namely Boutes, François Freres, Taransaud and Seguin Moreau.

Quinta de La Rosa

Quinta de la Rosa has been in the Bergqvist family since 1906, although they have been in the port trade as shippers under the family name, Feueheerd, since 1815. It currently has around 55 hectares under vine and produces around 50,000 litres of port and 160,000 litres of table wine each year.

Quinta de la Rosa was given as a christening present for Claire Feueheerd, Sophia’s grandmother, in 1906. The family port shipping company, Feueheerd, was sold in the 1930s but La Rosa was kept and run by Sophia’s grandmother, Claire. In 1988 Sophia and her father, Tim Bergqvist, decided to restart the family business and launched Quinta de la Rosa as a top quality port producer onto the market place.

Starting in the early 1990s, the Bergqvist famuly were one of the pioneers in taking red wine production in the Douro region seriously. Quinta de la Rosa’s wines, both red and white, have won many accolades in the press and are sold in many prestigious restaurants and wine stores around the world. Since 2002, Jorge Moreira, one of the finest wine makers in Portugal, has been making wines at La Rosa.

Quinta de la Rosa is situated in Northern Portugal, 100kms inland from Oporto. It is set in the heart of the Alto Douro ‘A’ grade port growing area and is located along the banks of the river, near Pinhão.
