Os Paulistas

History: Located at the southern foot of the Serra d’Ossa, this place is special, you can feel it! Two streams bring the rainwater from the Serra, keeping the soil cool in the scorching Alentejo heat, never allowing the groundwater level to drop below 5 meters, thus eliminating the need for irrigation for the proper development of the vines. This is where vineyards were once planted, and the place was known as Chão dos Eremitas, with “Chão” being an old term for a flat area, and “Eremitas” referring to the Hermit monks of the Order of Saint Paul.

The vineyards were so significant that a Papal Bull from 1397 exempted the “Pauperes Eremitas” from paying taxes (duties) on their vineyards. But archaeology goes further, as the discovery of the only Phoenician wine amphora in the interior of the country, dating from the 8th century BC, connects this place to wine about 900 years before the arrival of the Romans, marking 3,000 years of history linked to wine.

The Vinha “Chão Dos Eremitas” is situated at an altitude of 256-267 m. The Granitic – Non-Humic Litholic soils of granitic origin are poorly evolved, sandy in texture, without aggregates, and slightly acidic. The grapes, also from another time, planted in 1970, include Tinta Carvalha, Moreto, Castelão, Alfrocheiro, and Trincadeira, showing that there was another Alentejo, without irrigation and without improving varieties. An Alentejo worth recovering, this is our tribute to the Paulists.

Viticulture: Grapes produced under certified integrated production without the use of herbicides.

Vinification: Nighttime manual harvest, hand-selected, 30% whole bunches and 70% destemmed, falling by gravity into the tank. Spontaneous fermentation and maceration for 25 to 40 days, followed by 18 months of aging in French oak barrels over three years old. Released in March 2023.

Food Pairing: A red with good acidity, suitable for fatty meats and stew dishes.

António Maçanita

Joana and António Maçanita had a dream, create a wine with unique style, shaped to the personality of the two winemakers. The opportunity arises for the Douroregion, where Joana performs most of her professional activity. Among the terraces and long lines of vineyards, she’s faced with very special grapes, impossible to remain indifferent, Joana called António and challenged him for their first trip. In 2011 the roots are posted for the project of brother and sister, and Dourowas just the right spot. Following the same guideline and quality of the work done in other projects, António and Joana, believe that, the work on the vineyards is very important to achieve the best quality for their wines. The vineyards are located in the Douro, Sub-Region of Cima Corgo near the village of Pinhão. Maçanita Vinhos, carefully chosen their vineyards to fit the right profile, of concentration, richness and freshness. Brother and sister walked together the vineyards in every important operation that defines the quality and health of the grapes. With a enology based in the respect for the fruit, in which the extraction of color and structure of the grapes is made in a soft and slow process. The Maçanita wines are a pure expression of oenology “by Maçanita”, fruit above all.
