Poeirinho is a wine produced exclusively with grapes from our vineyards at Quinta de Baixo, where we practice organic viticulture, certified by SATIVA. Poeirinho, named after the old designation for the Baga grape, is a tribute to the great Bairrada wines of the past, which were light in color and alcohol content but had enormous aging potential. Dirk Niepoort’s great passion for this grape variety and the fantastic Bairrada terroir has led him, over the past few years, to search for small plots of Baga from very old vines scattered around the Cantanhede area.
Poeirinho 2019 comes from several plots of very old vines. It was vinified in open lagar and closed vat, where it underwent carbonic maceration and fermented for 4 weeks, finishing fermentation in a barrel. The malolactic fermentation took place in used barrels, where it aged for 20 months. It was bottled in November 2021 without filtration.
Vinification: The year 2019 had some rain and intense cold in March, which resulted in reduced budding. With a warm spring, the grapes ripened earlier, leading to an early harvest. The harvest of the white wines began on August 26 and ended with the red wines on September 26. It was a good year, with balanced acidity. Despite the alcohol level being higher than the previous year, the freshness and elegance that characterize the wines of Quinta de Baixo were maintained.
Ideal with roast goat, dishes with sausages, baked cod, or vegetarian dishes with legumes.
