O Produtor, tasting note published in February 12th 2024

With its lively garnet color, the appearance of this wine is probably closer to a Burgundy Pinot Noir. After the "heavyweight" of 2021, 2022 is a challenging year for this style of wine, as it is characterized by considerable concentration, but the success of this wine is due to an early harvest. The nose reveals the complexity of the grape varieties and old vines that give rise to it. It starts floral, followed by hints of graphite over a base of cherry and rhubarb. The wood is incredibly discreet and balanced by notes of aromatic herbs that make it complex and sophisticated. On the palate, it is elegant, precise, and structured. The finish is persistent and long, complemented by excellent acidity that promises fantastic evolution in the bottle.

Niepoort

Charme is a rare wine from the Douro. Its elegance and complexity, its enveloping and soft tannins, are a unique way to express the old vines, aged between 70 and over 100 years, cooler and sheltered from Vale de Mendiz, in the heart of the Pinhão Valley. Dirk Niepoort finds in Charme his ultimate interpretation and declared passion for the Burgundy region. A signature wine, a unique wine. Charme is the only still wine produced in the Vale de Mendiz cellar, in the round granite lagares.

The 2022 growing season was the driest of the 21st century! The 2022 harvest was the earliest ever! In recent years, we have seen greater climatic variability and more frequent extreme events, such as the heatwaves and intense rains that characterized 2022 in the Douro. In the natural way we work at Niepoort, this climatic variability has a major impact on the final profile of the wines, and so this year was one to remember.

The whole clusters were lightly crushed in granite lagares where they were trodden. The most important aspect of this winemaking process is the pre-fermentation maceration period and the start of alcoholic fermentation, where extraction is very short but intense. Charme’s fermentation is initially done in lagares, and then the process is completed in barrels. It ages in French oak barrels for 15 months. Bottled in February 2014.

Gastronomic suggestion: Mushrooms and game dishes, such as partridge and pheasant.

Niepoort Vinhos

The Niepoort family has been creating Port Wines since 1842. The first property in Douro was bought in 1987 and Dirk Niepoort started a new Era in the company with the creation of the first Redoma red in 1991. In the last years Niepoort took on the great challenge of interpreting other soils and climates and acquired two properties in other regions, Dão and Bairrada. Discover the Niepoort Triangle which express the different terroirs: Schist (Douro), Limestone (Bairrada) and Granite (Dão).
