Moreto Chão dos Eremitas
Moreto is a caste from the old Alentejo encepamento, sister of Castelão and daughter of the cross between Sarigo and Alfrocheiro Preto.
A 100% Moreto, one of the few 100% wines from this grape variety in Portugal. A disconcerting wine, which demonstrates the role of this grape variety in the old Alentejo vine variety. Freshness and power.
Located in the south foot of Serra d’Ossa, this place is special, sit down! Two streams bring the rainwater from the Serra keeping the ground cool in the torrid heat of the Alentejo, never lowering the water level below 5 meters. It was here that the vineyard was formerly planted, the place was known as Chão dos Eremitas, “Chão” the ancient term for flat area, and “Eremitas” referring to the Eremitas monks of the order of São Paulo. Here there is evidence of the uninterrupted production of wine since the 14th century, the vine had such importance that a Papal Bull in 1397 exempts the “Pauperes Eremitas” from paying taxes in their vineyards. But archaeology goes further, as the discovery of the only Phoenician wine amphora in the country’s interior, dating from the 8th century BC, links this place to wine around 900 years before the arrival of the Romans, in what is 3,000 years of history linked to wine.
The grapes, in granite soils and in a certified Integrated Production regime, are selected on the table of choice, 30% whole bunch of 70% destemmed, fall by gravity into the vat. Spontaneous fermentation and maceration of 40 days in skins, followed by 18 months in old barrels.
