Mater-Dôme
Region: Mêda (Upper Douro) – 600 m of altitude.
Soil: Transition between schist and granite.
The region of Mêda has been rediscovered. In the 1950s and 60s, its wines were well-known and popular in the old restaurants of Porto, alongside Vinho Verde and Vinho Maduro. Our relationship with Mêda began in 2003, and since then, we have given special attention to the region, working with its wines. This terroir, once famous, is now diluted in the vast area of the DOC Douro but has an extraordinary potential of its own.
Located between the Dão and Douro regions, Mêda shows characteristics of both. With soils transitioning between schist and granite, and altitudes reaching up to 700 m, the region enjoys a distinct climate: more precipitation than the rest of the Upper Douro, milder summers, and harsher winters.
The Wine: The high-altitude terroir and the schist/granite transition in Mêda allow the production of wines that age with great quality, without needing to be bottled by the second or third year. For this reason, this wine has an unusually long aging process, both in barrels and in tanks. This approach allows for a different wine evolution from bottle aging, with other oxidation/reduction conditions, developing fresh tertiary aromas closer to the wine’s original character. It’s a distinct type of refinement.
Winemaking: Classic. Fermentation in tank followed by a 20-day maceration. Two years of aging in French oak barrels, followed by 13 years of aging in tank.
