O Produtor, tasting note published in May 27th 2024

The presentation of this Marqués de Murrieta 2020 is a fascinating blend of aromas of raspberry, blueberry, and black cherry, accented by notes of thyme, rosemary, and sandalwood. Straightforward and precise, it reveals a juicy fruit core, shaped by elegant tannins and a fresh, pleasant finish.

Marqués de Murrieta

This wine reflects the elegance, strength, and consistency that are the hallmarks of the Marqués de Murrieta winery.

The grapes come mainly from the Finca Ygay, located in Rioja Alta, a 300-hectare estate surrounding the winery. The soils are predominantly clay-limestone, and the varying altitudes provide a diverse terroir.

Vinification: The harvest is manual. The blend is composed of 82% Tempranillo, 8% Graciano, 7% Mazuelo, and 3% Garnacha. After arriving at the winery, the grapes are destemmed, and each variety ferments separately in stainless steel tanks under temperature control. Maceration lasts 8 to 10 days, with pump-overs and punch-downs to enhance contact between the must and the skins, promoting a slow and natural extraction of aromas and polyphenols. After fermentation, the solid parts of the grapes are pressed in vertical presses in a gentle, slow process that extracts the color and ripe tannins present in the skins.

Aging: 21 months in American oak barrels with a capacity of 225 liters.

Food Pairing Suggestions: Pairs beautifully with hake dishes (try it with a lightly smoked hake kokotxa with pil-pil, olives, and soy sauce); chickpea dishes with white truffle; or grilled baby squid with aromatic herbs and olive oil.

Marqués de Murrieta

Marqués de Murrieta´s foundation is linked to the origins of the Rioja wines since Luciano Murrieta produced in 1852 the first Rioja wine and was also the first one to export his wines. Luciano, appointed Marquis by the King Amadeo of Savoy thanks to his work in Rioja, travelled to Bordeaux to learn the winemaking techniques that he introduced later in Spain. He established the concept of “château” in the Ygay Estate where he built the emblematic Ygay Castle. In 1983 Vicente Cebrián Sagarriga, tenth Count of Creixell, took over the project. He modernized the winery and with his entrepreneurial vocation he continued the legacy of Marqués de Murrieta. After his death his eldest son, Vicente D. Cebrián-Sagarriga, current Count of Creixell, assumed together with his sister Cristina the management of the winery, accompanied by a young and qualified team. Over the years, the Count of Creixell´s family has become the perfect continuity to maintain the balance between tradition and modernity positioning Marqués de Murrieta in the 21st century in a privileged position in the world.
