O Produtor, tasting note published in May 23rd 2020
On the nose it is extremely perfumed, floral, with jammed fruit and aromas of wet earth. In the mouth, it makes one feel a very well integrated wood, red fruit and toasted coffee. The finish is rustic, leaving us the long sensation of being in front of an earthy wine.
Mafarrico is a wine by winemaker Álvaro Martinho Lopes. Produced in very limited quantities, these wines rigorously reflect the elegance and finesse of this terroir. At its core, this is a project of ‘garage wines’ in the oldest wine region in the world.
It is in the Baixo Corgo that Maquia is born, from a viticultural heritage consisting mainly of very old vineyards with distinct locations (4.5 ha south-facing and 3 ha east-facing), altitudes between 200 and 350 meters, and very steep soils.
These vineyards were built in the past by ‘hand and iron’ and have very low yields and a complex blend of grape varieties. Álvaro Martinho Lopes practices sustainable viticulture where biodiversity and landscaping are framed in a unique setting.

Álvaro Martinho Lopes
You may not know Álvaro Martinho Lopes but it is very likely that he has already drunk wines where he has been in love with the Douro viticulturist, literally putting his hand. The winemaker from Quinta das Carvalhas, Real Companhia Velha, supports Jorge Moreira in his personal projects and also at La Rosa and… he also has wines of his own production: Mafarrico and Maquia. wines to taste, fantastic person to meet!
