Lisa Pettotti-Brown, tasting note published in July 5th 2020

Le Dôme is part of the portfolio of skillfully crafted wines by JCP Maltus from Saint-Émilion. Neil White is the head winemaker and Thomas Duclos is a consultant here. The 2018 Le Dôme is made up of 80% Cabernet Franc and 20% Merlot, with a pH of 3.82 and 14.3% alcohol. With a medium to deep garnet color, it sensuously slips from the glass with captivating aromas of blackberry pie, kirsch, blueberry preserves, and plum pudding, alongside hints of menthol, rose oil, pencil shavings, and fragrant earth. The palate, medium to full-bodied, delivers fantastic energy and freshness, with layers of perfumed red and black fruits and a firm, very finely grained texture, finishing with a lingering mineral note. Stylistically, this is one of the most elegant Le Dôme vintages I’ve tasted – and I love it!

Le Dôme

Le Dôme is a single-vineyard wine located near Château Angelus, Premier Grand Cru Classé. Its origins date back to the ‘garage’ movement of the 1990s. It is one of the three Saint-Émilion Grand Crus that outgrew this movement and now challenges the ‘Cru Classés’ every year.

Viticulture: The vines, 3.20 hectares, planted between 1960 and 1970, are pruned low – about 30 hectoliters per hectare – with four bunches per vine (less than half the volume allowed by the Appellation), ensuring great concentration. The soil is composed of sand over crasse de fer (iron deposits), which, combined with the south-facing slope, ensures excellent drainage, keeping the vines constantly searching for moisture. The parcel was acquired solely for its provenance, with the terroir and age of the vines being the determining factors. The neighboring parcels are illustrious, including Château Angelus, a Premier Grand Cru Classé.

Vinification: Le Dôme undergoes two to three passes of green harvesting – at fruit set and veraison – ensuring that only the most perfect bunches are selected – first by bunch, then, after destemming, grape by grape. Only conveyors are used to transport the grapes, and the wine is fermented in wooden vats after extreme cold maceration. The wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in new French oak and is barrel-aged in a climate-controlled cellar at 14°C.

Something Unusual: Le Dôme is considered the greatest expression of Cabernet Franc in Bordeaux, surpassing Château Cheval Blanc and neighboring Château Angelus. We started producing this wine in 1996, two years after our arrival in Saint-Émilion. With 20 years of history, Le Dôme competes with the greatest and most historic châteaux of the Appellation.

JCP Maltus Domaines & Châteaux

In the heart of Saint-Émilion, where tradition echoes through medieval streets and century-old vineyards shape the horizon, a story of audacity and passion was born. It was here, during the height of the “garage wine” movement in the 1990s, that Jonathan Maltus, an Englishman with African roots, found his home. Inspired by a desire to challenge Bordeaux’s classic norms, he brought with him a simple yet powerful philosophy: do things differently and do things better. For him, the true value of a bottle of wine lies in its taste, not in the grandeur of its label.

At the historic Château Teyssier, Jonathan launched a true revolution. He transformed this iconic estate into a laboratory of innovation while preserving the authenticity that makes Saint-Émilion a global benchmark. Fifteen years later, Jonathan became the first Englishman to achieve the coveted 100 Parker points and was honored by the Queen with an Order of the British Empire, a rare and extraordinary recognition in the world of wine.

With the opening of Le Dôme’s new winery, Jonathan cemented his legacy, blending tradition and modernity in a space that reflects the essence of his vision. In 2008, he crossed the Atlantic and found a new stage for innovation in Napa Valley, California. There, he fused the elegance of Bordeaux’s savoir-faire with the intensity of New World terroirs, crafting wines that celebrate the best of both traditions. This gave rise to the World’s End brand.

The JCP Maltus Domaines & Châteaux team is a rarity in the Bordeaux wine world, managing both the production and commercialization of its wines. In 2015, it solidified a strong position in the en primeur market, and in 2018, it brought an even more ambitious vision to life, creating a company that combines financial strength with an innovative spirit. Today, it is not just a name in the world of wine; it is a testament to the power of challenging conventions and the passion for turning the ordinary into the extraordinary.
