José Maria da Fonseca
The Hexagon is made up of six grape varieties — Touriga Franca (30%), Touriga Nacional (20%), Syrah (20%), Trincadeira (14%), Tinto Cão (10%) and Tannat (6%) — which give the wine a unique complexity, an intense ruby color, and a dense, closed aroma. It is a red wine with very well-integrated tannins and a long finish.
This is the “top-of-the-line” wine from José Maria da Fonseca, created by winemaker Domingos Soares Franco, who has always aspired to produce a great Portuguese wine at an international level. From this limited production, about 8500 liters were made. Delicious after decanting, it pairs well with game dishes and cheese, and is a wine with great aging potential.
Winemaking: The grapes are crushed in a stainless steel lagar and fermented at 27°C for about 6 days. The alcoholic fermentation finishes in oak casks, where the wine rests on fine lees for 3 months, with regular bâtonnage. After the first racking, the wine returns to the same casks. At the end of aging, a final racking is carried out before bottling, without filtration or stabilization.
Aging: The wine aged for 8 months in new half-pipes of French oak.
