Silky and elegantly layered, with raspberry and strawberry blossom notes, which are accented by orange zest and black tea and linger on a polished finish.

J. Christopher

A special-selection Pinot Noir that beautifully displays the depth and elegance of the Dundee Hills appellation.

J. Christopher is a line of wines that elegantly captures the distinctive character of Oregon’s Northern Willamette Valley, with a mission to produce terroir-driven wines in a lasting style that emphasizes finesse, longevity, and balance.

Owned by the internationally recognized winemaker, Erni Loosen (also owner of the Appassionata Estate, where the wines are produced), the fruit is sourced from excellent producers in various sub-regions of the Willamette Valley.

The Volcanique cuvée is a selection of outstanding barrels from the Bella Vida, Abbey Ridge, Charlie’s, and Kolb vineyards in the hills of Dundee. The wine showcases the savory quality, fruit purity, and fine-grained texture that characterizes the deep, red volcanic clay of these hills. The 2018 vintage is an excellent example, with its delicately floral aromas, silky texture, and structural finesse. As with all our wines, it has the depth and structure to age gracefully for many years.

The year 2018 was very warm and dry, but without extreme temperature spikes. This resulted in a balanced growing season. Cooler weather and a bit of refreshing rain arrived in September, helping to slow down ripening while retaining freshening acidity. The wines are characterized by fruit that is rich and dense, but not overripe, supported by juicy acidity and fine, ripe tannins.

Winemaking: 100% destemmed; native yeast fermentation; unforced malolactic; 18 months in barrels (25% new); no fining or filtration.

In the press:

“Pretty cherry fruit shines brightly here, with a seam of blood orange adding fresh acidity. This is a clean, well-delineated wine.” – Wine Enthusiast, February 2022

“Ripe red and blue fruit aromas show fine definition and complementary suggestions of candied flowers, smoky minerals, and allspice. Juicy and broad on the palate. Dusty tannins build slowly on the persistent finish, adding framework and gentle closing grip.” – Vinous, February 2022

Weingut Dr. Loosen

When in 1988, Ernst F. Loosen took over the management of the family-owned business with over 200 years of history, he had already traveled the world and visited the most prestigious wine producers in search of the secret behind the greatest wines, with the aim of producing world-class wines himself. These journeys of discovery inspired his own philosophy that great wines are the perfect expression of the soil, climate, and grape variety.
It is in the heritage of his ancestors, in the old vineyards located in the Mosel Valley, that he found the material he needed to produce exceptional and complex wines, classified as “Grosse Lage” (equivalent to Grand Cru in Burgundy). Today, Weingut Dr. Loosen is the standard-bearer for a rediscovered German Riesling culture and a member of the VDP (Association of German Quality Wineries).
“Enjoying a great wine is a unique pleasure, both sensually and intellectually. The aromatic and textural sensations in a bottle of wine capture a whole cosmos, from the change of seasons to the distinctive terroir of a vineyard, the passion of the winemaker, and the distinctive stamp of the vintage. Wine is a historical record of the regional and cultural information collected in the grapes at a particular point in time, delivered directly to your glass. To achieve this marvel of humans working with nature, all the great winemakers I have met started with a clear vision of what their wines should express before the first grape is picked. For them, individual terroir triumphs over technology. And quality always comes before quantity. Great wines grow from great passion and dedication, and from clear convictions that are realized without compromise.
(…) That ability to transmit a visceral connection to a people, place, and time is what sets wine apart from any other beverage.” – Ernst Loosen
