J. Christopher
An elegant and delicately nuanced Pinot Noir from one of the oldest vineyards in the Chehalem Mountains appellation.
The Medici vineyard is situated on the south-facing slope of Chehalem Mountain, just a few kilometers east of the J. Christopher winery. The oldest blocks, planted in 1976 on volcanic soil, bring complexity and layers of minerality, with less emphasis on overt fruitiness, making this location ideal for J. Christopher’s winemaking style that employs traditional Old World methods. Owned by renowned Mosel vintner Ernst “Erni” Loosen (owner of the Dr. Loosen estate), the wines are handcrafted in small batches. J. Christopher’s philosophy is to produce terroir-driven wines in an Old World style that emphasizes focus, longevity, and balance.
The 2017 harvest was excellent in the Willamette Valley, despite a very hot summer. After the fast start to ripening in summer, September was cooler and had a bit of rain; this interval gave the grapes time to finish ripening at a much slower pace while maintaining refreshing acidity.
Vinification: 100% destemmed; native yeast fermentation; unforced malolactic; 18 months in barrels (25% new); no fining or filtration.
In the press:
“Reveals the warm and delicate aromas that old vines can bring. Beautiful rose petals and raspberries are in the mix, with balanced but discreet acidity.” – Wine Enthusiast
“Floral and lithe, with delicate flavors of cherry and strawberry accentuated by hints of savory tarragon that glide on an elegant finish.” – Wine Spectator
