J. Christopher
The J. Christopher is a line of wines that elegantly captures the distinctive character of the Northern Willamette Valley in Oregon, with the mission of producing terroir-driven wines in a lasting style that emphasizes finesse, longevity, and balance.
Owned by the internationally recognized winemaker, Erni Loosen (also owner of the Appassionata Estate, where the wines are produced), the fruit is sourced from excellent producers in various sub-regions of the Willamette Valley.
The Basalte Pinot Noir is a finely structured red, sustainably grown, originating from vineyards located in two designated wine regions known as Chehalem Mountains and Dundee Hills. The volcanic soil, quite fine over fractured basalt, a type of very rocky soil, contributes to full-bodied and firmly structured wines. The Basalte captures this expressive character of the soil, with deep red fruit and a fine tannic structure that maintains the elegant style.
The year 2018 was very warm and dry, but without extreme temperature spikes. This resulted in a balanced growing season. Cooler weather and a bit of refreshing rain arrived in September, helping to slow down ripening while maintaining refreshing acidity. The wines are characterized by rich and dense fruit, but not overly ripe, supported by succulent acidity and fine, matured tannins.
Winemaking: 100% destemmed; native yeast fermentation; unforced malolactic; 20 months in barrels (25% new); no fining or filtration.
