O Produtor, tasting note published in May 31st 2023

Color: Ruby when young, with aggressive tannins that soften over time. A distinctive nose of the Ramisco grape variety, featuring sour cherry and cedar resin aromas. On the palate, it reveals an Atlantic and balsamic character, with a dry and austere texture and a marked mineral acidity.

Infinitude

Region: Located between the Serra de Sintra and the Atlantic Ocean, 25 km from Lisbon, Colares is one of the country’s oldest wine regions (1908). It is the westernmost wine-producing area of mainland Europe and the smallest region for still wines in Portugal.

Vineyards and Terroir: The vines are planted in their own roots on characteristic sandy soils, free from phylloxera, less than 1 km from the Atlantic coast and at an average altitude of 110 meters. The climate is strongly influenced by the Atlantic, with moderate summer temperatures and constant salty winds. The Serra de Sintra to the south promotes the formation of mists and maintains high relative humidity. The training system is free, with low trailing canes over the sand. Small reed stakes (pontons) are used to lift the grape bunches during summer. Reed fences and dry-stone walls protect the vines from winds.

Winemaking and Aging: Harvest occurs at the end of September. This wine is crafted using the classic “skin contact” method, with 50% of the grapes destemmed. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures (26º-28ºC) with gentle pump-overs. Aging lasted 5 years, starting in large exotic wood vats, followed by small French oak barrels (over 4 months in second-use barrels), and finally in tanks and bottles. Bottled in May 2023.

Winemaker: Francisco Figueiredo.

Aging Potential: Up to 20 years.

Pairings: Perfect with roasted meats, game, and mushroom dishes. This wine benefits from prior bottle opening and/or decanting. Serve at a temperature of 18º-19ºC.

Technical Details: Total acidity: 6.13 g/L | Volatile acidity: 0.84 g/L | pH: 3.6 | Free/total SO2: 20/95 mg/L | Residual sugar: < -- g/L

Infinitude

Like a life, a wine is also the visible result of an infinity of events. It is a living work, never finished, always evolving. This is how the wines were born in Quinta da Azenha in Colares, in the vineyards of the Osorio family of Vasconcelos Jardim Gonçalves. This is a family project, fruit of the desire to give continuity to the memory of generations producing wine with roots in Madeira and Douro. And that now extends to the millennial region of Colares, one of the oldest in Portugal, whose origin goes back to 1255, when D. Afonso III started the first vines from France. Cultivated in the recovery of the Sintra mountain range, the Pinot Noir and Merlot castes find a microclimate protected from the Atlantic winds, with dewy mornings and mist-tempered summers. Planted in “hard ground” soil, they are harvested separately and the grapes are carefully vinified by the classic “tanning” process. The stage is followed in small oak barrels in the mythical Colares Cooperative Winery. The result is dry, delicate wines with salty notes. Full of complexity and freshness, with great potential for bottle aging. An elegant invitation to celebrate, enjoy or simply contemplate on a multitude of occasions.
