Herdade do Esporão

Torre do Esporão is the ultimate expression of the singularities of the year, together with the unique characteristics of our territories and the experience of those who make it. Made to last, it represents Esporão’s ambition to make the best wines that nature provides, in a responsible and inspiring way.

Throughout the harvest we closely and in detail follow the maturation rates, so each plot and grape variety was harvested separately according to its profile and respectiveorigin. In 2017 theAragonês was harvested
on 21 August, earlier than usual. The Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacionalarrived at the winery on 11 September, the Alicante Bouschet dos Perdigões on 14 September and the de Lavradores on 29 September. After the harvest, the Aragonês started the alcoholic fermentation in marble presses with foot treading and finished in concrete vats where it did the malolactic fermentation and was then racked and stored in 5000 litre vats. The Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacionalwere co-fermented in marble presses with foot treading, after pressing they were transferred to 500 litre barrels of French oak with a second year of use, where they also did malolactic fermentation and remained for 18 months.

Both portions of the Alicante Bouschet grape variety fermented separately in concrete vats. Malolactic fermentation took place in new 500 litre French oak barrels, where it remained for a further 18 months.

Aged for 18 months in new and second use 500-litre French oak barrels and 5000-litre balseiros. This is followed by a minimum of three years’ ageing in the bottle.
