O Produtor, tasting note published in August 18th 2016
From a 106-year-old vineyard, this is a dense wine that nevertheless walks a continuous line between power and grace. Spicy plum, blueberry, dark chocolate, coffee, wild herbs and grated nutmeg glide together on the nose. The palate is full and concentrated, silky in texture and intricately interwoven with sinewy tannins. Its best is yet to come. Drink it between 2020-2035 and probably beyond.
The 61st vintage, from ungrafted vines over 100 years old and without irrigation, matured for 18 months on 81% French and 19% American (34% new). The decision to withhold release of this shiraz until after ’14 was correct – this is a densely packed wine destined for a long life, as vertical tastings have repeatedly proven, intensity and focus achieved without apparent effort.

Henschke
The Henschke family has been making wine since first-generation winemaker Johann Christian Henschke planted his first vineyard in the early 1860s.
Today, fifth-generation winemaker Stephen Henschke and his winemaker wife Prue are internationally renowned for their wines of exceptional quality, innovation and sustainability in the vineyard.
Their philosophy is holistic – to ensure that the created environment sits in a healthy balance with the natural landscape; using biodynamic and organic principles to create the best environment for vine growth.
The sixth generation, Johann, Justine and Andreas are all actively involved in continuing the family winemaking tradition, conscious of their role as custodians of the Henschke vineyards.
In 2020, Henschke was awarded the prestigious Halliday Wine Companion ‘Winery of the Year’ for 2021. Six wines received ratings of 97-99 points, as well as four with 96 points, nine with 95 points and 10 with 90-94 points. The oldest vines, known as the ‘Grandfathers’, were planted around 1860 from pre-phylloxera material brought in from Europe and are estimated to be over 160 years old.
The 2016 vintage, released globally on 5 May 2021, is Hill of Grace’s 59th vintage (55th edition) and is deeply coloured, plush and dark, with a concentrated, complex, vibrant and energetic palate and beautifully layered tannins.
