Evel
Evel red wine is produced from vines planted at Quinta do Casal da Granja, Quinta de Cidrô, and Quinta dos Aciprestes, located in the plateau of Alijó, S. João da Pesqueira, and Nagoselo, respectively. In the first two locations, the wines benefit from a cool climate that allows for the slow ripening of the grapes, resulting in wines that are elegant, aromatic, and with soft tannins. At Aciprestes, the warmer climate leads to wines that are more structured and powerful.
Evel red wine is a typical reference of the Douro region.
Evel is one of Portugal’s oldest and most charismatic wine brands, having been registered in 1913.
The commercial name has no intrinsic meaning, other than the one derived from its anagram: Leve (light).
A century ago, through a wordplay, the aim was to evoke its organoleptic characteristics, which have endured to this day – an elegant, smooth, and pleasant wine – always present in the official menus of the Portuguese Republic at the time.
Evel became famous from the 1950s onwards, largely due to the status of “supplier to the Presidency of the Republic,” granted to Real Vinícola, proudly displayed on its labels.
Winemaking and aging:
The grapes are hand-harvested and transported to the winery in 40 kg crates. The bunches are destemmed, and the grapes are lightly crushed before being directed to the fermentation tank. The alcoholic fermentation of the must takes place in stainless steel tanks at 24-26°C. The wine is aged in French oak casks for 8 months before bottling.
