Eisele Vineyard
Winter 2018 received only a third of the previous year’s rainfall combined with low temperatures in February, slowing the vegetative cycle. Generous spring rains arrived in late March a few days before budbreak, while cool temperatures continued to slow canopy growth. This allowed for extremely balanced vineyards with little need for intervention. Flowering occurred on the 24th May, one of the most recent occurrences on record. The fruit set was generous, with wonderfully full bunches. The following summer started hot and ended mild, with no extreme weather demand, creating ideal ripening conditions. Continued kind weather in August allowed the fruit to ripen slowly with colour levels off the charts. The team was able to harvest the front blocks (on both sides of Simmons Creek) at optimum ripeness between 21 September and 15 October, the last harvest in 7 years. Selection in the cellar was needed little or not at all. Once in the tank, the excellent extractability resulted in a high level of polymeric anthocyanin and moderate levels of tannins, leading to balanced, vibrant and refined young wines. The “”elevation”” conducted in a reasonable quantity of lightly toasted oak barrels with carefully selected grains and origins, resulted in Cabernets with great finesse and a tight structure that developed magnificent breadth and length during their first year in bottle.
Ageing: 20 months in 100% new oak.
