Robert Parker, tasting note published in October 17th 2020
The super elegant and insinuating 2016 Contador could well be the modern version of the extraordinary 2001. The nose is a bit shy and takes time to reveal subtle aromas of violet, lily and red cherry, deeply perfumed but not explosive. The explosion comes with the 2017, which I also tasted at the same time as this one, which was very straightforward, whereas this 2016 is more timid. The palate is intense but velvety, even satiny, with ultra-fine, elegant tannins and great purity of flavours, delineated, clean and symmetrical. This is undoubtedly one of the best Contadors of recent times. Bravo! Incredibly, this wine has 15.2% alcohol, which is completely hidden. It should age gracefully for a long time, but it is hard to resist.... 7,000 bottles were filled in June 2018.
With this 2016 Contador, Benjamín Romeo demonstrates that a great wine can be made in a small Rioja winery, a wine that is also unique and very expressive of its terroir.
The 2016 Contador is aged for 20 months in 100% new French oak barrels.

Bodegas Contador
The history of Bodega Contador begins in 1995, when Benjamin Romeo, winemaker and viticulturist, acquired a century-old cave dug into the rock under the Castle of San Vicente de la Sonsierra (Rioja). In 1996, he made the first vintage of his wine “La Cueva del Contador” and began buying vineyards for his project to become a “bodeguero” – a wine producer.
