Jeb Dunnuck, tasting note published in January 24th 2019
Finally, the 2016 Syrah IX Estate reminds me of the otherworldly 2010 and is as deep as Syrah gets. Tasting like Côte Rôtie La Mouline de Guigal (perhaps on steroids) with its huge notes of bacon, spring flowers, blue fruits, grilled meats and incense, it's full-bodied and massive but at the same time excitingly pure, seamless, elegant, and weightless. It is certainly approachable today, but will benefit from 2-4 years of bottle age and keep for two decades.
A lifelong love of the wines of the Northern Rhône inspired the decision to plant clones of Cote-Rotie and Hermitage in the rocky, volcanic soil of Quinta IX.
The resulting wine is of unusual merit, with nuances of blackberry, acacia, wild herbs, and smoked meats. The “”IX Estate”” Syrah is unique in its textural complexity, abundantly powerful yet precise, and “a great example of a singular style of Syrah…. not to be forgotten.” The wines of this vintage are classic and pure, with a spectrum of flavour and are aromatically pixelated. They display an intellectual character that exhibits distinct moods with time in the glass. Unlike some vintages, the 2018s transform from savoury aromatics to deeply fruity aromatics rather than the other way around. As they open up, their well-defined, firm tannins evolve into a very full, velvety texture.
