Robert Parker, tasting note published in October 22nd 2018
The 2016 IX Proprietary Red Estate is a blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot and 7% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet-purple, it comes out of the glass with flamboyant Black Forest cake, blueberry jam and notions of plum pudding, plus hints of spice cake, unsmoked cigars, menthol, liquorice and dusty earth and accented by black tea. The palate is full-bodied but incredibly balanced and vibrant with amazing freshness and very fine, very firm tannins. It has the most provocative earthy sparks, providing surprising depth to the very long and beautifully perfumed finish. Impressive.
"2016 is like 2013 with more character," Allison Tauziet, winemaker at Colgin, told me. ""It offers the harmony of 2013, but has just a little more to say. It actually has some post-dry qualities - creating more flavour, more colour and more filling. And it seems to have the texture of a riper vintage. I love the aromatics of a cooler season like this. It was the weather at the end of the season that drove everything home. The harvest was well paced, though the flavours peaked simultaneously, so you couldn't take it for granted.
Our “IX Estate Proprietary” is a powerful blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
“IX Estate” is a wine of great power, with aromas of dark fruits, savoury herbs and spices. First produced in 2002, “IX Estate” can be enjoyed in youth and ages gracefully for years to come. The wines from the 2016 vintage are exciting and multifaceted – each nuance of luscious fruit is accompanied by vivid notes from each distinctive terroir.
