James Suckling, tasting note published in February 12th 2020
The 2010 Château Pontet-Canet offers a very deep garnet colour. The nose explodes with a wide range of black fruit jams and savoury nuances: plum jam, blackcurrant, black cherry coulis and liquorice with whiffs of dried lavender, melted chocolate, charcuterie, black olives, truffles and camphor plus a touch of sandalwood. The full-bodied palate is fully loaded with black fruits, exotic spices and earthy nuances with a firm base of ripe, grainy tannins and bold freshness, finishing with epic length and depth. Much more expressive and seductive than many 2010s at this stage, yet still incredibly young!
CHÂTEAU PONTET-CANET
A direct neighbour of Mouton-Rothschild, Pontet-Canet benefits from a magnificent terroir that has contributed enormously to its reputation. What is most striking about this property is its meteoric rise and the biodynamic turn taken, not without risk, in a region where “ecoviticulture” has not yet become the norm. In the space of ten years, and thanks to Alfred Tesseron, the owner, and Jean-Michel Comme, the manager, Pontet-Canet has become the most sought-after brand in the Médoc. A model of success that will certainly serve as an example! Since 2020, Justine Tesseron, Alfred’s daughter and now head of the estate, has been responsible for keeping Pontet-Canet in a class of its own.
