Jeb Dunnuck, tasting note published in April 24th 2022

The 2019 Château Mouton Rothschild is based on 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot, and has reached a relatively normal alcohol level of 13.5%, which is higher than the 2009 and shows the quality of the Cabernet Sauvignon in the vintage. It shows the new, modern style of Bordeaux in its purity, elegance and finesse, while still being an incredibly concentrated Pauillac, and where some Mouton vintages can jump out of the glass, this is a more perfect, streamlined and elegant beauty that builds with time in the glass and is almost impossible to miss. On the nose, crème de cassis, lead pencil shavings, forest floor, liquorice, wet earth, and graphite emerge, as well as some nuances of espresso, and it's rich, medium to full-bodied, has ultra-fine tannins, and a great finish. This is a pure Bordeaux haute couture that unquestionably offers pleasure today (again, almost all modern Bordeaux from a great vintage offers pleasure in its youth) but will require a solid decade to reach maturity, and should evolve for 20, 30, 40 years or more. This is not an unformed wine beast that demands bottle age, and I suspect it will have a wide and indulgent drinking window that consumers will love.

Château Mouton Rothschild

Château Mouton Rothschild is harvested by hand and undergoes a rigorous selection of clusters and berries so that only those that meet the ideal conditions to form part of the future wine are vinified. It is fermented in wooden foudres and aged in new French oak barrels for about 20 months. The wine also spends a few months in Château Mouton Rothschild’s huge cellar. Here the temperature is constantly between 12ºC and 15ºC, with humidity of 80 to 90% and very little or no light – optimal conditions for bottle ageing and storage.

Château Mouton Rothschild is considered by many to be one of the finest red wines in the world. Its wines are intense, tremendously elegant and complex, with enormous ageing potential. A jewel of the old world.
The year started with a warmer and drier winter than usual, with the temperature reaching a record 24.7° C on 27 February. The mild weather triggered an early start to the vine cycle, which gradually slowed down with the arrival of a cooler spring and lower than average temperatures. As a result, flowering finally took place around the normal time. After sharply contrasting conditions in June, when a period of late cold and heavy rainfall was followed by an early heatwave, very good weather prevailed in July. The summer was particularly sunny and warm, leaving the vines in perfect condition on the eve of harvest. Some welcome rainfall in July and August greatly helped to allay any fears of dehydration.
Mirroring nature’s generosity in 2019, the wines are very rich, deeply coloured and with good alcohol content. Satin tannins make this a very promising vintage.
Blend from the 2009 vintage: 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot and 1% Pedit Verdot.

Château Mouton Rothschild

It was in 1853 that Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild bought Château Brane-Mouton, which he immediately renamed Château Mouton-Rothschild located in the territories of Pauillac.

After being ranked second on the prestigious 1855 list, it became a Premier Grand Cru in 1973, and thus part of a limited list as there are only 5 Premiers Grands Crus: Château Lafite-Rothschild, Château Latour, Château Mouton-Rothschild the three Pauillacs, Château Margaux, the only Margaux, Haut-Brion, the only Graves until 1986 and since then Pessac-Léognan.

The vineyard extends over some 80 hectares planted in varieties typical of the Medoc and Haut-Medoc regions .
