Jeb Dunnuck, tasting note published in June 10th 2020

One of the best Haut-Bailly vintages on the market, the 2005 is a quintessential example of this terroir, showing incredible finesse and elegance coupled with ample concentration and depth of fruit. Complex notes of black cherries, darker currants, gravelly earth, graphite, smoke tobacco and cedar notes all emerge from the glass, and it is full-bodied, perfectly balanced, and pure class on the palate. I always thought the 2009 was the greatest vintage from this estate I've tasted, but this one is certainly knocking on the door, albeit in a more classic, structured style. I find it insanely good today, but it's still young and set for another 30 years of truly spectacular drinking! Hats off to Veronique Sanders and the team at Haut-Bailly for another magical wine.

Château Haut-Bailly

Haut-Bailly has 28 hectares of vineyards which are very well located on high, gravelly land to the east of the village of Léognan. The wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (65%), Merlot (25%) and Cabernet Franc (10%). It is aged in small oak barrels (50% new) for 18 months and is bottled unrefined and unfiltered.

Ch. Haut-Bailly makes small quantities of a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon rosé, preferring to use the single grape variety to maintain freshness in the blend. The wine is fermented 1/3 in new oak barrels and 2/3 in stainless steel at 16°C.
Haut-Bailly is known for its smoothness and silkiness but since the mid-1990s the wines have better depth of fruit as well as more grip, concentration and body. They are now among the upper echelons of Pessac-Léognan wines.

Château Haut-Bailly

On Bordeaux’s doorstep and in the heart of the Pessac-Léognan appellation, Château Haut-Bailly, a classified growth of the Graves region, has been standing in the middle of its 30-hectare monoblock vineyard for over four centuries.
Set on one of the appellation’s highest hills, Château Haut-Bailly benefits from a mosaic of soils and subsoils composed of gravel, sand, clay and marine fossils. This exceptional terroir ensures consistent quality during the harvests. In the heart of the vineyard, century-old plots feature a variety of grape varieties: along with cabernet sauvignon and merlot dominant are cabernet franc, malbec, petit verdot and mixed carménère.
A constant emphasis on quality is achieved through low yields, careful selection and the use of high-performance equipment. The vines are tilled, maintained without herbicide and harvested by hand. Haut-Bailly wines have a subtle and harmonious style, combining finesse and consistency, suppleness and structure and soft tannins with rich aromas – pure elegance.
Haut-Bailly’s name originates from the estate’s 17th century owner, a Parisian banker named Firmin Le Bailly. The estate caught the eye of another financier, Robert Wilmers, President of M&T Bank (New York) who bought Haut-Bailly in 1998. To lead the estate, he chose Véronique Sanders as Managing Director and the winemaking talent of Gabriel Vialard. Together, Château Haut-Bailly has seen a steady increase in quality and notoriety over the past two decades.
