Robert Parker, tasting note published in July 25th 2016
Tasted at the vertical Château Figeac on the estate and then in Bordeaux a year later. The 2010 Figeac was a problem child in its youth, very variable and difficult to pin down, irritating on occasion. Now with a couple of years in bottle, it is really starting to show what it can do and has far exceeded my expectations. It is certainly more restrained on the nose than the more generous 2009 Figeac. The aromatics are holding everything back. Then, with continued aeration, it reveals a subtle marine influence - seaweed and sea spray aromas, estuarine mudflats. The palate is medium-bodied with moderate depth, but what really sets this wine apart is the fineness of tannin, symmetry of structure and freshness on the finish, facets hitherto kept secret. As such, it surpasses the 2009, the finish weightless but intense, beckoning you to take another sip. The aromatics need to up their game and match what is evolving on the palate - if they do, this will be a very serious Figeac.
The 2010 vintage can be described as exceptional in the Bordeaux region in general and for Château Figeac 2010 in particular. With round, plump Merlot and sumptuous, lovely Cabernets with red fruits, there is no doubt that Château Figeac is once again asserting itself as one of Saint-Emilion’s great wines.

Château Figeac
Château Figeac is a wine estate in the Saint-Émilion appellation of Bordeaux. It is the largest estate in Saint-Émilion, with 40 hectares (99 acres) of vineyards. Due to its soil, which is dominated by gravel, it is planted in the Cabernet Sauvignon (35%), Cabernet Franc (35%), and Merlot (30%) grape varieties. Most other wines from Saint-Émilion are dominated by Merlot, and Figeac therefore bears some resemblance to the wines of the Médoc and Graves, despite being situated on the right bank of Bordeaux. The wine, which is one of Saint-Émilion’s most famous, is aged in 100% new oak barrels.
Château Figeac wine is classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé (Class B) in the official Saint-Émilion wine classification.
