Robert Parker, tasting note published in February 25th 2013
A full, medium to full-bodied, exquisite Margaux from this medieval, heathland estate of imperious beauty in the southern Medoc, D'Issan's 2010 is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot. The deep, gravelly soils mixed with clay have provided extraordinary aromatics. Yields were ridiculously low (22 hectolitres per hectare) and the wine tips at 13.7% natural alcohol. Production was small after selection for the big wine, and the result is a dense, purple-coloured wine with beautiful aromatics of spring flowers, blueberries and black raspberries, as well as hints of cassis, tar and charcoal. The wine is wonderfully pure, well balanced and soft enough to be approached in 4-5 years or cellared for 25-30 years.
To produce the Grand Vin de Château d’Issan, we are using the old vines of the Clos. The terroir is mainly composed of gravel on the surface and clay in the deep subsoil. It offers beautiful ripeness and optimal freshness of our 2 different varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. An authentic Margaux wine, it always expresses its finesse, complexity, precision of tannins and a unique longevity. Château d’Issan is aged in French oak barrels for 16 to 18 months, including 50% brand new oak.

Château D'Issan
Regum mensis Aris que Deorum” which means “To the Table of the Kings and the Altar of the Gods” is the historic motto of Château d’Issan, classified as third growth in the Bordeaux Classification of 1855.
Thanks to its unique terroir composed mainly of gravel on the surface and clay in the deep subsoil, the wines have always shown delicate and subtle aromas.
The microclimate, regulated thanks to its proximity to the ocean and the estuary, provides ideal conditions for growing vines.
The history of the estate dates back to the 12th century, when the estate’s wine was served at the wedding of Eleanor of Aquitaine and the future king of England, Henry Plantagenet, on 18 May 1152.
The present castle was built in the 17th century with a singular wall to surround the single vineyard. The “Clos d’Issan”, built in 1644, represents 30 hectares of vineyards out of a total of 45 hectares. The grape varieties planted are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
Château d’Issan also represents a long family heritage and a continuous evolution. Since 2013, the Cruse family, who acquired the property in 1945, has shared this adventure with the Lorenzetti family (owners of Châteaux Pedesclaux in Pauillac and Lilian Ladouys in St Estephe).
