O Produtor, tasting note published in April 12th 2023
With its lively, pale colour, this wine’s appearance is probably closest to a Burgundian Pinot Noir.
The nose reveals the complexity of the grape varieties and old vines which make up this blend. It starts off floral, followed by fleeting nuances of graphite on a base of raspberry and rhubarb. The oak is incredibly discreet and balanced by minty aromas which further elevate the wine’s sophistication.
The palate impresses with outstanding elegance, precision, a delicate structure and superb acidity, finishing long, with persistent spice and freshness.
The Charme is a very special Douro wine. Its elegance, complexity as well as its smooth and velvety tannins form a unique expression of the old vines from which it is produced, in the cooler and more sheltered vineyard sites of Vale de Mendiz in the middle of the Pinhão Valley.
For Dirk Niepoort, the Charme represents his ultimate interpretation and proclaimed passion for Burgundy.
This still, unfortified wine is produced in our round granite tanks at the Vale de Mendiz cellars. The Charme is a signature wine, a wine like no other.
In Vale de Mendiz, harvesting began on 25 August and ended on 1 October. This vintage was a welcome return to freshness, elegance and wines with naturally high acidity – perfect for our Niepoort style. An excellent opportunity to refill our cellar with barrels of Charme!
A few small batches of wines were made for the Charme in the early stages of the harvest, using 100% whole bunches foot-trodden in traditional stone lagares. After a short maceration period, the alcoholic and malolactic fermentations finished in French oak barrels, where the wine was aged for 15 months, prior to bottling.

The Niepoort family has been creating Port Wines since 1842. The first property in Douro was bought in 1987 and Dirk Niepoort started a new Era in the company with the creation of the first Redoma red in 1991. In the last years Niepoort took on the great challenge of interpreting other soils and climates and acquired two properties in other regions, Dão and Bairrada. Discover the Niepoort Triangle which express the different terroirs: Schist (Douro), Limestone (Bairrada) and Granite (Dão).
