O Produtor, tasting note published in November 27th 2022

This 2021 vintage presents a very dark color and remarkable aromatic intensity, with notes of wild berries and spices. Well-polished on the palate, it features a firm structure and good volume with well-integrated oak notes. It is a robust wine that combines freshness and fruit purity, resulting in a very long finish.

Cedro do Noval

The Cedro, named in honor of the emblematic tree that dominates the terrace of Quinta do Noval, is an authentic expression of the Douro. Made primarily with traditional Portuguese grape varieties from the Douro region, it also includes a proportion of Syrah, which rounds out and opens up the fruit, giving the wine tremendous charm and accessibility.

In the year 2021, the overall quality of the wines produced is quite good. The dry reds exhibit deeply concentrated color, moderate alcohol content, good structure, and lively acidity.

Vinification: The grape varieties are fermented separately in stainless steel tanks for a period of 8 days and then undergo malolactic fermentation.

Aging: 100% aged in French oak barrels for 12 months, with 10% in new wood, 10% in second-year barrels, and 80% in third-year barrels.

Quinta do Noval

The property, with 145 hectares dominating the Pinhão Valley, is the soul and essence of Quinta do Noval. The soil is essentially composed of schist rock, making all vineyard work particularly difficult. Quinta do Noval replanted, since 1994, 100 hectares of vineyard with the noblest grape varieties of the Douro region, adapting pruning methods to the typology of the plots. The plots were replanted in batches of a single variety, each one chosen according to the characteristics of each parcel of land: altitude, sun exposure, and vine planting type.

Today, plots planted with mixed grape varieties are progressively disappearing from the Douro Valley. Noval was a pioneer in this trend, being the first to replant vineyards while conserving intact the magnificent traditional terraces with their walls of schist stone.

Quinta do Noval is the only historic Port wine shipper to bear the name of its estate. The identity of Quinta do Noval is rooted in its terroir.

The consistency of style of Quinta do Noval’s Vintage Ports over the decades is one of the particularities of Quinta do Noval in the world of Port. Consistency simply because all Vintage Ports come from a single vineyard, a magical place.

The place is so beautiful, so remarkable, that the idea of being part of something greater than us, that existed before us, and will exist after us, is always present. The notion of continuity is fundamental: our obligation to the past, our responsibility in the present for the vineyard and its wines, and our obligations to future generations who will tend the vineyard and produce wine as we do today.
