Catena Zapata & Rothschild
Amancaya, the younger sibling of a joint project by two great names in the wine world, Catena Zapata and Château Lafite-Rothschild, presents a subtle harmony between Argentine identity and Bordeaux style.
To celebrate its Andean roots, it bears the Quechua indigenous name of a beautiful little flower that grows in the Mendoza region.
Situated at the foot of the snowy peaks of the Andes Mountains, the Mendoza region is known as the best wine region in Argentina. Planted on plateaus between 800 and 1200 meters, the vineyards of Mendoza are among the highest in the world. Protected from rain in the west by the mountains and from the Pampas in the east, it is a very arid region.
The wines of Mendoza owe their character to the exceptional sun enjoyed by the vineyards and the significant temperature variations between day and night.
The grapes come from selected lots of old vines located in Lujan de Cuyo, on the outskirts of Mendoza, and also in Altamira, further south. Lujan gathers a great diversity of soils, depending on the proximity of the vines to the mountains or the Mendoza River; these soils are an original alluvial formation, consisting of layers of clay, rock, and gravel. In Altamira, the vineyard is planted at an altitude of 1000 meters, in the ancient alluvial bed of the Tunuyán River.
