Castillo Ygay
The Castillo Ygay is made exclusively from the finest grapes of La Plana, a 40-hectare plot planted in 1950, located at 485 meters above sea level in the highest part of the Finca Ygay. This 300-hectare estate surrounds the Marqués de Murrieta winery in Rioja Alta.
Hand Harvesting: We carry out a selective manual harvest, using small crates to preserve the quality of the grapes. Tempranillo was harvested between September 17 and 22, while Mazuelo was picked on September 28, 2011.
Winemaking: The grapes are destemmed and, after passing through the sorting table, the varieties ferment separately in stainless steel tanks with temperature control. Maceration lasts between 10 and 12 days, during which frequent pump-overs, punch-downs, and délestages are carried out to enhance contact between the must and the skins, allowing for a slow and natural extraction of aromas and polyphenols. After fermentation, the grape solids are gently pressed in vertical presses, promoting the extraction of color and ripe tannins from the skins.
Aging: The Tempranillo ages for 28 months in 225-liter American oak barrels, while the Mazuelo undergoes the same period in 225-liter French oak barrels. Once the final blend is determined, the wine rests for 13 months in concrete tanks before bottling.
