O Produtor, tasting note published in March 5th 2024

The nose is dark and brooding with intense aromas of ripe berry fruit and cloves. The spicy fruit-driven aromas of the nose follow through onto a dense, peppery palate with flavours of morello cherry, cranberry, fresh plums, and red licorice. The wine is light to medium bodied with fine, integrated oak-derived tannins. Vibrant acidity drives a dry finish with hints of dark chocolate and tobacco.

Cap Maritime

The Hemel-en-Aarde Valley is one of the most exciting locations for growing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in South Africa. Cap Maritime is situated atop a ridge that separates the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde appellation from the Valley. This is where we strive to create wines that capture the essence of their origin while representing a style we aspire to.

With this harvest, the opportunity arose to work with fantastic vineyards in the Elandskloof, Overberg, and Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge appellations, giving birth to our Coastal wines resulting from the blend of these selected parcels classified as Cape South Coast origin.

Through these wines, winemaker Gottfried Mocke seeks to provide youthful accessibility while remaining true to the house style. His preference to accentuate texture and perfume characters over the opulence of primary fruit is a hallmark of his wines. Coastal Pinot Noir grapes were handpicked and sorted into small lug boxes, before being transported by refrigerated truck to our winery in Franschhoek. At the winery, a careful triage (selection process) took place to ensure that only healthy, whole berries were moved to concrete fermentation tanks. Most of the grapes were destemmed, leaving a whole-cluster component of approximately 25% with no additions being made. After spontaneous fermentation, we transferred the juice to 2-fill 225L French barrique for a 12-month élevage.

Boekenhoutskloof

A BRIEF HISTORY
Boekenhoutskloof was founded in 1776. Situated in the far corner of the beautiful Franschhoek valley, the farm’s name means ‘Boekenhout’s ravine’ (pronounced Book-n-Howed). Boekenhout is an indigenous Cape beech tree much favoured for furniture making. In 1993, the farm and estate were purchased and restored and a new vineyard planting programme was established which now includes Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Grenache, Sémillon and Viognier.

WINES
As a producer, Boekenhoutskloof is a Syrah specialist, with its premium Boekenhoutskloof range selling out on the release of each vintage, and The Chocolate Block – a Syrah-based blend – is probably the most successful new wine offering to come out of South Africa in the modern era.
The Wolftrap brand of Rhone-style blended wines was inspired by the pioneering spirit of the early settlers who built what is now a monument to their adventurous spirit. The Porcupine Ridge range of delicious, everyday wines is a favourite on tables around the world – offering great value for money and superb drinking.
