O Produtor, tasting note published in May 10th 2024

The wine is light straw in colour and bright in appearance. Inviting aromas of lime, apple blossom and melon, with hints of lemongrass and chalk, dominate a fresh and vibrant nose. The rich citrus character of the nose carries through to a smooth, creamy palate with flavours of quince, green apple and preserved lemon. The wine is medium-bodied and textured, with well-integrated oak nuances contributing to its elegance and balance. Flavours of grapefruit and lemon verbena follow through to a clean, pure finish.

Cap Maritime

We started producing our Cap Maritime Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with the 2017 vintage, working with vineyards located in the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. The enthusiasm around the brand and the wines was palpable, but the appellation had stolen our hearts. Research began and within two years, in 2019, untouched land was acquired and saw the establishment of Cap Maritime, Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. The property is just 4 kilometres from the ocean and is situated on the north-west face of the valley, with views over the hills and the Bot River Lagoon.

With the 2021 harvest, the prospect arose of working with fantastic vineyards in the Overberg and Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge appellations. From this opportunity, the blend of these selected plots classified as Cape South Coast origin, our Coastal wines were born, through which winemaker Gottfried Macke seeks to bring a youthful accessibility while remaining true to the house style. His preference for emphasising texture and perfume over the opulence of primary fruit is a hallmark of his wines.

The Coastal Chardonnay grapes were hand-picked and sorted into small boxes before being transported by refrigerated lorry to our winery in Franschhoek. At the winery, a careful selection process was carried out to ensure that only healthy, whole bunches were pressed. The juice settled naturally in the vat for two days before being transferred to 20 per cent new 22SL French barrels (neutral wood), 50 per cent older 22SL French barrels and 30 per cent concrete vats where fermentation began spontaneously. A light batonnage was carried out during the 12-month ageing period.

Boekenhoutskloof

A BRIEF HISTORY
Boekenhoutskloof was founded in 1776. Situated in the far corner of the beautiful Franschhoek valley, the farm’s name means ‘Boekenhout’s ravine’ (pronounced Book-n-Howed). Boekenhout is an indigenous Cape beech tree much favoured for furniture making. In 1993, the farm and estate were purchased and restored and a new vineyard planting programme was established which now includes Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Grenache, Sémillon and Viognier.

WINES
As a producer, Boekenhoutskloof is a Syrah specialist, with its premium Boekenhoutskloof range selling out on the release of each vintage, and The Chocolate Block – a Syrah-based blend – is probably the most successful new wine offering to come out of South Africa in the modern era.
The Wolftrap brand of Rhone-style blended wines was inspired by the pioneering spirit of the early settlers who built what is now a monument to their adventurous spirit. The Porcupine Ridge range of delicious, everyday wines is a favourite on tables around the world – offering great value for money and superb drinking.
