Buçaco
Bairrada DOC.
Alexandre de Almeida, founder of the hotel chain bearing his name — the oldest in Portugal — created the Buçaco Wines in 1917. Inspired by his many travels through European hotels, especially along the French Côte d’Azur, he encountered the concept of a hotel wine cellar. He then decided to adopt this idea at the Palace Hotel of Bussaco, creating a private cellar and beginning the winemaking process that would give rise to the glorious Buçaco wines.
In the early 20th century, one of the most fascinating chapters in Portuguese wine history was born. A true icon, intentionally kept away from the limelight and reserved for a very exclusive circle. Since the first vintages, it has been served to kings, queens and heads of state — as evidenced by the menus proudly preserved at the Palace Hotel Bussaco.
Buçaco wines are true collector’s items, with noble labels that to this day reflect their heritage. A historical and winemaking legacy that continues to delight those who discover it.
