O Produtor, tasting note published in June 15th 2023

Aromas of red fruits — with notes of cherry and a touch of strawberry — go hand in hand with a floral component suggesting rockrose and forest floor (pine needles). In the mouth, it presents itself simultaneously full-bodied and velvety, revealing flavors of black plum and a light hint of bell pepper. The well-crafted structure combines round tannins with pronounced freshness, cut by acidity that imparts clarity and balance.

Bom Malandro

Bom Malandro Red is a classic blend, produced from grapes of the noble varieties of the Douro from the Symington family vineyards. The grapes come from higher-altitude vineyards, starting at 400 meters above sea level, favoring a profile based on freshness and balance, and a fruity character.

After a succession of very hot and dry years in the Douro, the 2021 growing cycle and harvest were among the coolest in recent years, contrary to what was observed in the rest of Europe. These moderate conditions contributed to slower and more gradual ripening, favoring balance, while the harvest was defined by three periods of rain that influenced the grape picking sequence. Unusually cool nights contributed to excellent acidity and color in the wines.

Vinification: In stainless steel tanks with gentle maceration by pumping over, a balanced extraction of color and aromatic components is sought, adjusting the tannin extraction to the final profile of the wine we are producing. Fermentation at a lower temperature (22-24°C) allows for an aromatic, appealing wine that is always easy to drink.

Aging and bottling: In stainless steel tanks and used 400-liter barrels of French oak. Bottled from June 2023.

It’s not just anyone who’s a “Bom Malandro” (Good Rascal). It’s a “Bom Malandro” who knows.
Knows how to choose – grapes.
Knows how to influence – buddies.

Symington Family Estates

There is a natural affinity between wine and family. Long-term vision and commitment through many generations are essential for the success of a family wine company. A newly planted vineyard takes time to produce great wines and often requires a lifetime’s work to yield best results. The Symington family, with Scottish, English and Portuguese ancestry has been present in the Douro for five generations — since 1882 — and through the current generation’s great grandmother, the family’s links to the wines of the Douro span 14 generations, to the mid-17th century and to the very beginnings of the history of Port.
