Beyra
With the Beyra project, we were pioneers in the concept of High Altitude Wines. In Vermiosa, amidst the highest vineyards in Portugal, I returned to my roots in the same winery where I conducted my first harvest.” – Rui Roboredo Madeira
The main benefit of viticulture at high altitudes is attributed to the cooler climate, allowing for an increase in acidity levels achieved through thermal fluctuations between day and night. The cool nights lead to slower and more uniform grape ripening, enhancing the concentration of aromas and flavors. During the day, increased radiation due to the proximity of the sun aids in photosynthesis, resulting in improved color and an appropriate alcohol content.
Origin: Beyra Vinhas Velhas Tinto 2021 originates from old vines planted in clay-schist soil around the village of Vermiosa in Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, at an altitude exceeding 700 meters. The grape varieties are mixed in the vineyard, with Mourisco and Tinta Roriz predominating, along with small quantities of Borrão, Tinta Amarela, and Rufete.
Vinification and aging: The grapes are hand-harvested. Natural fermentation with indigenous yeasts in cement tanks. Aging for 12 months in French oak barrels.
