O Produtor, tasting note published in March 27th 2023

Explosive aroma, very intense, wild berries and spices with intense licorice notes in perfect balance with discreet barrel notes. Bold on the palate, with great volume, vibrant fruit and spice notes that mirror the nose, with very full-bodied and smooth tannins, and a long, persistent finish. Great aging potential.

Beyra

ORIGIN – Grapes sourced from vines planted in clay-schist soils, with an average age of 40 years, located on the Beira Interior plateau in the Douro River basin, within the Douro International Natural Park, at an altitude above 750 meters.

We select the best Tinta Roriz grapes perfectly adapted to the altitude, and depending on the year, variable amounts of Touriga Nacional and Jaen are added to the blend, giving it complexity and elegance.

VINIFICATION – Hand-picked harvest, followed by full destemming and immediate crushing. Spontaneous fermentation with gentle maceration in cement vats, using the classic “delestage” technique. Malolactic fermentation in used barrels.

AGING – Aged for 12 months in French oak barrels and Burgundy concrete eggs.

GASTRONOMY – Meat and game dishes, cured cheeses, or simply with a cigar.

Beyra - Vinhos de Altitude

In 2011, I returned to the same winery where in 1987 I worked my first harvest, in a small winery located in the village of Vermiosa, between the cold and in the highest vineyards in Portugal. I rehabilitated the property, because I believed that this region’s winemaking heritage is one of the hidden treasures of Portuguese Wines: old vines of native grape varieties perfectly adapted to the rugged climate caused by the high altitude, along with the soil, where many veins of quartz run through the schist and granite. Through BEYRA wines, I the seek the Beira Interior’s identity: wines of great complexity resulting from the combination of aromatic intensity, minerality and freshness.
