Robert Parker, tasting note published in February 24th 2021
There is an incredible wealth of aromas here, fragrant, intoxicating and showy, an extroverted vintage with a deeper voice than the 2018. It has incredible precision and delicacy, subtlety and elegance. The wine is compact, seamless and with incredible balance. It is powerful and elegant, and there is energy and light, symmetry and strength. There are layers and layers here, with a spherical core, fresh and agile, everything a great wine should have. It has an endless finish. Incredible!
L’Ermita carries the “gran vinya classificada”, the top official vineyard classification in Priorat, and the 2019 L’Ermita comes from 1.45 hectares planted in 1939 with Garnacha, Cariñena and white grapes. The grapes for the 2019 vintage – 73% Garnacha, 26% Cariñena and 1% white grapes (Garnacha Blanca, Macabeo and Pedro Ximenez) – were picked between 11 and 14 October. The wine is close to 15% alcohol but has a low pH (freshness) fermentation with 30% whole bunches in oak vats with indigenous yeasts and maturation in French oak casks for 14 months. Unlike what I have seen in many of the 2019s, this is higher in Cariñena than ever before, but the grapes were all co-fermented in two 1,000-litre oak vats, and there is perfect integration of the grape varieties.

Alvaro Palacios
With extremely low yields and vines from very old vines, Álvaro Palacios pays tribute to the unique character of an exceptional terroir dominated by a single soil type, the licorella. In these very fragile black slate soils, Álvaro Palacios produces magnificent wines from Cabernet Sauvignon, Garnacha Tinta (Grenache), Syrah and Cariñena (Carignan), wines that reveal a pure expression of the Priorat.
