O Produtor, tasting note published in May 27th 2014

Intense pomegranate color. Bergamot, orange peel and aromas of wildflowers. In the mouth, it is possible to feel spices, cocoa and vanilla. It is an expressive wine, elegant and with generous tannins. Very gastronomic.

The old vineyard of Quinta da Pellada is our greatest genetic heritage, where a large ampelographic collection has been planted, representing the varieties always present in the vineyards of the Dao Demarcated Region. We have identified, reproduced and vinified some of these indigenous varieties which in recent decades, for various reasons, sometimes qualitative, sometimes productive, have lost expression in the region and in the country. In order to recognize and interpret their value, this work of recovery has given rise to the release of some wines. Wines which are produced on a small quantity, after careful selection throughout the Quinta da Pellada vineyard from the healthiest plants of each variety. From this diversity, we have highlighted three fields that gave rise to Quinta da Pellada “Alto”; Quinta da Pellada “Casa”; Quinta da Pellada “49”. Without changing anything to the Quinta da Pellada wine, which maintains its normal blend, in which these parcels have a great expression, we decided to bottle separately a small part of these interpretative studies of specificity of each of tee micro-terroirs, to show them “49” . 49 is the third of the new lessons in the cellar terroir. It has the most heterogeneous soils – all granite as a base – and the most limited mixture (Touriga Nacionaland Alfrocheiro). It was aged in well-used French barrels for 28 months.

Quinta da Pellada

The first historical references about Quinta da Pellada seem to be around 1570. The Dão wine region was established in 1908, framed by three mountain ranges – Buçaco, Caramulo and Serra da Estrela – and preserve from the Atlantic winds, the region as very special climatic conditions and this producer Alvaro Castro is one of the best Portuguese producers and unquestionable leader in Dão wine region. For the Quinta da Pellada come mainly grapes “field blend” from the old vines, but also the Touriga Nacionaland Tinta Roriz, where it discovers the intense fruit and freshness from the farm grapes that give the name to this wine.
