Van Zellers & Co
Like the Symingtons, who used their grapes to integrate into the Smith Woodhouse vintages. When the Van Zeller family took over this estate, they found it almost totally abandoned, with about 10 hectares of old vines. The recovery work would be arduous, but nothing kept Cristiano van Zeller away from this arduous task, or would he not come from a superb “school”, such as Quinta do Noval, of which he was president. Work began on recovering the vineyards and houses that were almost reduced to dust. But what drove Cristiano was the realisation, day after day, that there was a pearl there that had so much to give. They also acquired adjoining plots of land until the Quinta reached 28 hectares of vineyard. The inaugural harvest was in 1996 and never stopped producing great wines. In recent times, the wines from this quinta, CV, Vale Dona Maria, and the recent Vinha do Rio and Vinha Francisca have been among the best wines in Portugal for Wine Advocate, the most important and prestigious wine publication in the world. The Van Zellers range of wines is also produced at Quinta do Vale Dona Maria. These wines come from grapes bought from outside the Quinta but, for their quality, they deserve to carry the family name. In these wines, the professional treatment and rigour is exactly the same as in the wines that come from the farm, there is no easiness.
