O Produtor, tasting note published in May 14th 2023
Dark tea colour surrounded by a crown of yellow gold. Subtle olive-green highlights around the rim bear witness to the wine's great age. The nose is majestic and confident. Multiple dimensions and layers of interwoven flavours have evolved over decades of oak ageing. A background of cedar and balsamic aromas gives the wine a fresh, elevated character. Warmer notes of toffee, marzipan and vanilla, along with fine, smooth oak, are superimposed. The wine owes much of its seductive character to a magical blend of spice notes - nutmeg, clove and black pepper - which emerge as the wine opens up in the glass. The palate is fresh and vibrant, the acidity and alcohol well integrated, and the silky smooth texture is the hallmark of the best barrel-aged ports. The intense, complex flavours carry through to the seemingly endless finish. Elegant and graceful, this wine has reached the ideal age for drinking.
To mark the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III on 6 May 2023, Taylor’s has reserved a very limited quantity of Very Very Old Tawny Port to be bottled as a commemorative limited edition. To create a wine worthy of the occasion, with its overriding importance in the national life of the United Kingdom, Taylor’s bottlers have drawn on some of the oldest and rarest port wines maturing in oak casks in the company’s cellars in Porto.
